THE MEANING OF KYRIE ELEISON

The excellent book "Orthodox Worship" describes the meaning of the word mercy as follows:

"The word mercy in English is the translation of the Greek word eleos. This word has the same ultimate root as the old Greek word for oil, or more precisely, olive oil; a substance which was used extensively as a soothing agent for bruises and minor wounds. The oil was poured onto the wound and gently massaged in, thus soothing, comforting and making whole the injured part. The Hebrew word which is also translated as eleos and mercy is hesed, and means steadfast love. The Greek words for 'Lord, have mercy,' are 'Kyrie, eleison'  that is to say, 'Lord, soothe me, comfort me, take away my pain, show me your steadfast love.' Thus mercy does not refer so much to justice or acquittal  a very Western interpretation  but to the infinite loving-kindness of God, and his compassion for his suffering children! It is in this sense that we pray 'Lord, have mercy,' with great frequency throughout the Divine Liturgy."*

Early Church Fathers are additional Evidence of the Bible.

We need to look at the writings of the Early Church Fathers.

Their writings are Evidence too.

http://www.kjvtoday.com/home/should-the-bible-include-acts-837-and-philip-said-if-thou-believest-with-all-thine-heart-thou-mayest-and-he-answered-and-said-i-believe-that-jesus-christ-is-the-son-of-god

early Latin fathers such as Irenaeus and Cyprian knew of the verse:

Irenaeus (180 AD): [Philip declared] that this was Jesus, and that the Scripture was fulfilled in Him; as did also the believing eunuch himself: and, immediately requesting to be baptized, he said, "I believe Jesus Christ to be the Son of God." (Against Heresies, 3.12.8)

However, the official Greek text of the Greek Orthodox Church, the 1904 Patricarchal Text, has included the verse:

"εἶπε δὲ ὁ Φίλιππος· εἰ πιστεύεις ἐξ ὅλης τῆς καρδίας, ἔξεστιν. ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ εἶπε· πιστεύω τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ εἶναι τὸν ᾿Ιησοῦν Χριστόν." (1904 Patriarchal Text, Acts 8)

Daniel Old Dating

http://biblehub.com/jps/daniel/8.htm

https://www.christiancourier.com/articles/869-amazing-prophecy-in-the-book-of-daniel-an

The ancient Jews believed that no books were added to the Old Testament after the time of the Persian ruler Artaxerxes (464-424 B.C.) (Josephus, Against Apion 1.8).

They always accepted the book of Daniel as a part of the Scriptures.

Hence they did not believe it was composed in the time of Antiochus, during the “Interbiblical” period.

Other books, which were written during the Interbiblical age, were rejected from the divine canon.

Aristotle: the Prime Mover

Aristotle believed that all movement depends on there being a mover. For Aristotle, movement meant more than something travelling from A to B. Movement also included change, growth, melting, cooling, heating…etc.
Just like his predecessor Heraclitus, Aristotle recognised that everything in the world is in a state of flux.
Aristotle argued that behind every movement there must be a chain of events that brought about the movement that we see taking place.
Aristotle argued that this chain of events must lead back to something which moves but is itself unmoved. This is referred to as the Prime Mover.
In Aristotle’s view change is eternal. There cannot have been a first change, because something would have to have happened just before that change which set it off, and this itself would have been a change, and so on.
In his book Metaphysics (literally after physics), Aristotle calls this source of all movement the Prime Mover. The Prime Mover to Aristotle is the first of all substances, the necessary first sources of movement which is itself unmoved. It is a being with everlasting life, and in Metaphysics Aristotle also calls this being ‘God’.
The Prime Mover causes the movement of other things, not as an efficient cause, but as a final cause. In other words, it does not start off the movement by giving it some kind of push, but it is the purpose, or end, or the teleology, of the movement. This is important for Aristotle, because he thought that an effective cause, giving a push, would be affected itself by the act of pushing. Aristotle believed the prime mover causes things to move by attraction in much the same way that a saucer of milk attracts a cat. The milk attracts the cat but cannot be said to be changed in the process!
Isaac Newton came to the same conclusion in his Third Law of Motion, when he said that ‘action and reaction are equal and opposite’. Aristotle was keen to establish that the Prime Mover is itself Unmoved, or unaffected, otherwise the whole concept would break down. The Final Cause causes movement as the object of desire and love. If God did give things an initial push then he himself would be changed. Instead God draws things to himself and remains unaffected. The stars and the planets move out of a spiritual desire to imitate God. They do this by moving in eternal circles.
Aristotle believed that God exists necessarily, which means that God does not depend on anything else for existence. He never changes or has any potential to change, never begins and never ends, and so is eternal. Eternal things, Aristotle claimed, must be good; there can be no defect in something that exists necessarily, because badness is connected with some kind of lack, a not-being of something which ought to be there, an absence of the ‘actuality’ that Aristotle thought God most perfectly has.
Aristotle argued that the Prime Mover had to be immaterial. It could not be made of any kind of stuff, because matter is capable of being acted upon, it has potential to change. Since it is immaterial, it cannot perform any kind of physical, bodily action. Therefore, Aristotle thought, the activity of the Prime Mover, God, must be purely spiritual and intellectual. The activity of God is thought.
But what does God think about it? God could not think about anything which caused him to change in any way; nothing which could affect him, or react, or even change him from not-knowing to knowing. Aristotle concludes that God thinks about himself only. Nothing else is a fit subject. He even defines God as ‘thought of thought’, or ‘thinking about thinking’. At the end of this line of argument, Aristotle comes to the conclusion that God knows only himself; so he does not know this physical world that we inhabit, he does not have a plan for us, and he is not affected by us.
Aristotle’s concept of the Prime Mover found its way into the medieval theology of Thomas Aquinas and his cosmological proof for the existence of God. Likewise, Aristotle’s teleological arguments found their way into Aquinas’ Natural Law.

The vision of Daniel 8 clearly speaks of Greece.

The ram is the Medo-Persian Empire.

This ram is conquered by a Goat from the West

which refers to the Greek armies under Alexander.

Page 1054

Alexander the Great, born in 356 BC, is depicted in Daniel Chapter 8 verses 5 and 21 and Daniel Chapter 11 verse 3.

Before the age of thirty ( 327 BC ) Alexander had conquered all of Persia.

Alexander's conquests had far-reaching effects on the Near East.

Greek language and culture were introduced to the area, considerably reshaping Near Eastern civilization.
This became known as Hellenism.
Hellenism greatly influenced Israel's culture, especially through the Septuagint, a Greek translation of the Hebrew Old Testament.
The Septuagint became the Scripture of the early Christians.
New Testament writers frequently quoted the Septuagint.

Jewish writers, such as Philo and Josephus, quoted the Septuagint.

Page 1067

Daniel 11 - the vision's relation

The relation of the vision to historical events of the Greek empire becomes apparent.  A great king shall arise in Greece who will rule with dominion.  This king must be Alexander ( 336 - 323 BC ).

Page 765

The second great prophet of Jerusalem's last days, along with Jeremiah, was Ezekiel.  When Nebuchadnezzar captured Jerusalem in 597 BC, the priest Ezekiel was one of the Judaeans taken into exile in Baylon.

"Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; but in the middle of the week he shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. The prophet Ezekiel composed the book of Ezekiel in Babylon.

All editorial work was carried out by the prophet Ezekiel.
The inclusion of historical dates is an important unifying factor.
The book is one of the most chronologically ordered books of the Bible.
Thirteen times a passage is introduced by an indication of time.
Babylon King Nebuchanezzar invaded Jerusalem in 598/597 BC.
Ezekiel's prophetic call came in 593 BC.

Page 1406

The traditional view asserts that Daniel was completed in the 6th century BC.

Manuscript evidence support this date ( 6th century BC ).
Fragments of Daniel were found among the Dead Sea Scrolls, that were written well before the second century.
Linguistic evidence fits a 6th century BC date.
Historical evidence supports the 6th century BC date.

The Book of Ezekiel

In 601 BC, Nebuchadnezzar, the Babylonian ruler, besieged Jerusalem.  In 597, Nebuchadnezzar deported to Babylon, the royal family, along with members of the upper class, including Ezekiel the priest. Five years later, Ezekiel became the first prophet to be commissioned outside Judah or Israel.  Jerusalem is destroyed in 587 BC.

DANIEL 11

The Book of Ezekiel

The author was Ezekiel the priest.

Almost all of Ezekiel's prophecies are in chronological order and are precisely dated.  The commencement of his ministry is 593 BC.  The termination of Ezekiel's ministry was in 571 BC.

The Book of Daniel

It was written during the sixth century BC.

Alexander the Great brought an end to the Persian Empire.

Alexander was a pupil of the philosopher Aristole.

In 333 BC, Alexander passed from Macedonia into Asia Minor and defeated the Persian armies.  Then he moved southward through Syria and Palestine to Egypt.  There was no need for a campaign against the Jews.  Legend makes Alexander a friend of the Jewish people.  Jaddua, the high priest, is said to have come out to meet Alexander, telling him of Daniel's prophecy that the Greek army would be victorious ( Daniel 8 ).  It does illustrate the friendly feelings between the Jews and Alexander the Great.  Alexander permitted the Jews to observe their laws, granted them exemption from tribute during sabbatical years.  When he built Alexandria in Egypt ( 331 BC ), he encouraged Jews to settle there and gave them privileges comparable to those of his Greek subjects.  Alexander was welcomed into Egypt as a deliverer from Persian oppression.  Hellenistic culture was Alexander's legacy to the Middle East.

Daniel Old Dating

https://www.christiancourier.com/articles/869-amazing-prophecy-in-the-book-of-daniel-an

[to rēma en tōi stomati sou hoti Kurios Iēsous]

(the word in thy mouth that Jesus is Lord).

The idea is the same, the confession of Jesus as Lord as in 1Co 12:3; Php 2:11.

No Jew would do this who had not really trusted Christ,

for [Kurios] in the LXX is used of God.

The word [Kurios] was and is the touchstone of faith.

Papyrus Rylands 458

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papyrus_Rylands_458

Papyrus Rylands 458 is a copy of the Pentateuch in a Greek version of the Hebrew Bible known as the Septuagint.

It is a papyrus manuscript in roll form. The manuscript has been assigned palaeographically to the 2nd century BC and it is the oldest known manuscript of the Greek Bible. The manuscript has survived in very fragmentary condition.

PAPYRUS FRAGMENTS P957

http://www.katapi.org.uk/BibleMSS/P957.htm

http://www.katapi.org.uk

John Rylands Library, Papyrus Greek 458. The earliest extant fragment of a bible MS, consisting of portions of four columns of a roll of papyrus extracted from the cartonnage of a mummy acquired in 1917 by Dr Rendel Harris. It is written in a fine book-hand, which can be assigned to the second century BC & contains Deut.xi.24-xxiv.3, xxv.1-3, xxvi.12, 17-19, xxviii.31-33. Small through these fragments are, their great age gives them a special interest, & it is noteworthy that they concur with the next earliest extant Septuagint MS (963) in agreeing with the vellum uncials Θ & A rather than B. Identified & edited by C H Roberts only two years ago.

BIBLE TRANSLATIONS

http://jewishencyclopedia.com/articles/3269-bible-translations

The Septuagint.

a study of the Egyptian papyri, which are abundant for this particular period, is said by both Mahaffy and Deissmann to show a very close similarity between the language they represent and that of the Septuagint, not to mention the Egyptian words already recognized by both Hody and Eichhorn. These papyri have in a measure reinstated Aristeas (about 200 B.C.) in the opinion of scholars. Upon his "Letter to Philocrates" the tradition as to the origin of the Septuagint rests. It is now believed that - his facts in general are worthy of credence (Abrahams, in "Jew. Quart. Rev." xiv. 321).

According to Aristeas, the Pentateuch was translated at the time of Philadelphus, the second Ptolemy (285-247 B.C.), which translation was encouraged by the king and welcomed by the Jews of Alexandria.

Grätz ("Gesch. der Juden," 3d ed., iii. 615) stands alone in assigning it to the reign of Philometor (181-146 B.C.).

Whatever share the king may have had in the work, it evidently satisfied a pressing need felt by the Jewish community, among whom a knowledge of Hebrew was rapidly waning before the demands of every-day life.

It is not known when the other books of the Bible were rendered into Greek.

The grandson of Ben Sira (132 B.C.), in the prologue to his translation of his grandfather's work, speaks of the "Law, Prophets, and the rest of the books" as being already current in his day.

A Greek Chronicles is mentioned by Eupolemus (middle of second century B.C.); Aristeas, the historian, quotes Job; a foot-note to the Greek Esther seems to show that that book was in circulation before the end of the second century B.C.;

and the Septuagint Psalter is quoted in I Macc. vii. 17.

It is therefore more than probable that the whole of the Bible was translated into Greek before the beginning of the Christian era (Swete, "An Introduction to the O. T. in Greek," ch. i.).

The large number of Greek-speaking Jewish communities in Palestine, Syria, Mesopotamia, Asia Minor, and northern Africa must have facilitated its spread in all these regions.

The quotations from the Old Testament found in the New are in the main taken from the Septuagint; and even where the citation is indirect the influence of this version is clearly seen.

The Maccabees/Hasmoneans:

History & Overview
(166 - 129 BCE)

http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/History/Maccabees.html

The family of Mattathias became known as the Maccabees, from the Hebrew word for "hammer," because they were said to strike hammer blows against their enemies. Jews refer to the Maccabees, but the family is more commonly known as the Hasmoneans.

—Critical View:

The name "Belshazzar" was previously held to have been invented by the author of the Book of Daniel, which has long been recognized as a Maccabean production (see Daniel).

Since the discovery and decipherment of the cuneiform inscriptions, however, "Belshazzar" is now generally admitted to be the Hebrew-Aramaic equivalent of the Babylonian form "Belsharuṣur" (Bel preserve the king), which has been found in the cuneiform documents as the name of the eldest son of Nabonidus (Nabuna'id), the last native king of Babylon (555-538 B.C.).

The Holy Scriptures
The New JPS Translation according to the Traditional Hebrew Text

The Tanakh is the canon of the Jewish Bible (also known as the Hebrew Bible, the Holy Scriptures, or the Old Testament). “Tanakh” is an acronym for the text’s three sections: the Torah (the Five Books of Moses), Nevi’im (Prophets) and Ketuvim (Writings).

The JPS Tanakh is widely recognized as the most authoritative and preferred English translation of the Hebrew Bible in the Jewish world and beyond.

Regarded throughout the English-speaking world as a landmark English translation of the Holy Scriptures, the JPS Tanakh has been acclaimed by scholars, rabbis, lay leaders, Jews, and Christians alike.

The Hebrew text of the JPS Tanakh is based on the famed Leningrad Codex, the masoretic text traceable to Aaron ben Moses ben Asher, ca. 930. Ben Asher researched all available texts to compile an authoritative Bible manuscript. In 1010 his work was revised by Samuel ben Jacob, a scribe in Egypt. Lost for centuries, the manuscript was eventually discovered in the mid-nineteenth cen- tury and became known as the Leningrad Codex.

commentators starting out with frameworks like this:

" We need to assume that the vision [of Daniel 8] as a whole is a prophecy after the fact.

Why? Because human beings are unable accurately to predict future events centuries
in advance and to say that Daniel could do so, even on the basic of a symbolic revelation
vouchsafed to him by God and interpreted by an angel, is to fly in the face
of the certainties of human nature. So what we have here is in fact not a road map
of the future laid down in the sixth century B.C. but an interpretation of the
events of the author’s own time, 167-164 B.C…"

DANIEL.

http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/articles/4871-daniel

The Name in the Old Testament.

The following persons called "Daniel" are mentioned in the O. T.: 1. A son of David by Abigail (I Chron. iii. 1); the parallel passage (II Sam. iii. 3) has "Chileab"; but this reading is perhaps a corruption due to the fact that the last three letters of  are identical with the first three letters of the following word, , and the form in I Chron. iii. 1 is probably correct. The forms of his name found in the Septuagint—Δαλουια; and Δαμυιηλ—support this view, in that they show the first letter of the name to be ר (Δ). G. Kerber (in his "Die Religionsgeschichtliche Bedeutung der Hebr. Eigennamen," 1897, p. 36) combines the name "Kile'ab" with "Kaleb," the name of the well-known companion of Joshua, and with "keleb" = dog. This, however, is a mere hypothesis, and can not serve as an argument for the name "Kile'ab."

2. A man of extraordinary righteousness (Ezek. xiv. 14, 20) and wisdom (xxviii. 3), who appears to have been almost as well known as Noah and Job, with whom he is mentioned in both of the passages cited.

3. A priest of the sons of Ithamar (Ezra viii. 2). The parallel passage in the Greek Book of Ezra (viii. 29) has the forms Γαμαηλ, Γαμηλος, and Γαμαλιηλ, which are evidently miswritings for Δαυιηλ. This priest returned with Ezra from Babylonia to Jerusalem in 458 B.C., and was one of those who sealed Israel's covenant with God (Neh. x. 6).

Descent of Daniel.

4. The most important bearer of the name is the hero of the canonical Book of Daniel and of the additions found in the Septuagint. This Daniel was among the prisoners carried by Nebuchadnezzar to Babylon after the capture of Jerusalem in the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim; he was also one of the young men instructed, by order of Nebuchadnezzar, in the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans (Dan. i. 3-4). No mention is made, however, of Daniel's birthplace or family. It is not known whether he belonged to the family of the King of Israel or to that of an Israelitish magnate. Josephus ("Ant." x. 10, § 1) evidently inferred from Sanh. i. 3 that Daniel was a relation of King Zedekiah (ἧσαυ τῶυ ἐκ τοῦ Σεδεκίου γέυους τέσσαρες ), while Pseudo-Epiphanius, on the strength of the same passage, makes Daniel the scion of a noble Israelitish family (compare Prince, "Critical Commentary on the Book of Daniel," p. 25).

Who else but Daniel of the Lions' Den ??

The last mention of Daniel in the Book of Daniel is in the third year of Cyrus (Daniel 10:1). Rabbinic sources suppose that he was still alive during the reign of the Persian king Ahasuerus (better known as Artaxerxes – Babylonian Talmud, Megillah 15a, based on the Book of Esther 4, 5), when he was killed by Haman, the wicked prime minister of Ahasuerus (Targum Sheini on Esther, 4, 11).

pottery shard from the remains of a town dating from the 10th century B.C. has been proven to be written in ancient Hebrew—making it the oldest known Hebrew inscription. Prof. Gershon Galil of the Department of Biblical Studies at the University of Haifa translated the text, proving that the Israel of that time was a major nation—not the backwoods tribe that some biblical scholars say it was.

The World's Oldest Christian Church
Dating to 33-70 AD
Rihab, Jordan
Beneath the Ancient Church of St Georgeous

BBC  British Broadcasting Corporation
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7446812.stm

Archaeologists in Rihab, Jordan, say they have discovered a cave that could be the world's oldest Christian church.

Dating to the period AD33-70, the underground chapel would have served as both a place of worship.

Rihab is in Northern Jordan. The cave is beneath the ancient church of St Georgeous, itself one of the oldest known places of worship in the world.

According to Dr Abdul Qader Al-Hassan, the director of the Rihab Centre for Archaeological studies, the cave site shows clear evidence of early Christian rituals that predate the church.

There is a circular area of worship with stone seats separated from living quarters.  This circular element, called an apse, is important says Dr Al-Hassan

used for Christian worship

An inscription in the floor of the church above refers to the "70 beloved by God and the divine"

Dr Al-Hassan says:
We found a very old inscription beside it and coins also, and crosses made from iron.

World's 'oldest Christian church' discovered in Jordan

Archaeologists claim to have found the world's oldest church dating from shortly after Christ's crucifixion

A very early underground church was found beneath the ancient Saint Georgeous Church, which itself dates back to 230 AD, in Rihab, northern Jordan near the Syrian border.

"We have uncovered what we believe to be the first church in the world, dating from 33 AD to 70 AD," Abdul Qader al-Husan, head of Jordan's Rihab Centre for Archaeological Studies, said.

"We have evidence to believe this church sheltered the early Christians – the 70 disciples of Jesus Christ."

A mosaic found in the church describes these Christians as "the 70 beloved by God and Divine".

Inside the cave there are several stone seats which are believed to have been for the clergy and a circular shaped area, thought to be the apse.

The Fragment of the Gospel of John is widely regarded as the earliest portion of any New Testament writing ever found.  It provides us with invaluable evidence on the spread of Christianity in the provinces of the Roman Empire in the first centuries of our era.

Torchbearers

Excavated from the city’s third-century Christian house, which is, by some hundreds of years, the earliest preserved Christian church, this painting is one of a dozen or so narrative friezes adorning the Baptistery. The 55 x 37–inch segment of fresco shows a line of women carrying torches and vessels. Their meaning is debated. Scholars long believed the women were on their way to anoint the crucified body of Christ, suggesting a theme of rebirth; current thinking is that they are brides, illustrating Eastern Christianity’s correlation of baptism with marriage.

Early Church at Aqaba
http://archive.archaeology.org/9811/newsbriefs/aqaba.html

Archeologists working in Aqaba have unearthed what they believe to be the world’s oldest church. Dating from the late third century AD.
http://www.kinghussein.gov.jo/tourism6e.html

New York Times
http://www.nytimes.com/1998/07/09/world/jordan-site-may-hold-oldest-church.html

Some of the world's earliest known churches have been recently discovered in Jordan.  These include a 4th century church at Umm Qais, a possible 2nd or 3rd century AD "prayer hall" at Bethany beyond the Jordan, and the remains of a mud brick building at Aqaba that may be the world's oldest known purpose built church.  This Aqaba early church dates from the late 3rd or early 4th century AD (exactly between 293 and 303).
http://www.atlastours.net/jordan/early_churches.html

The oldest known purpose-built Christian church in the world is in Aqaba, Jordan. Built between 293 and 303, the building pre-dates the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Jerusalem, Israel, and the Church of the Nativity, Bethlehem, West Bank, both of which were constructed in the late 320s.

In the early 1930s the Ras Shamra (Ugaritic) texts were published which included, inter alia, a description of a certain Dnil.  Some have attempted to show that this is the Daniel of Ezekiel.  However, this simply does not hold up to the description found in Ezekiel 28.  Collins, who supports a late date, confesses concerning Ugaritic Dnil that  “He is not portrayed as exceptionally wise, and even his righteousness is incidental to the story” (Collins p1)
