Abstract

Muhammad used several sources as information for his recital of the Qur'an. One of these sources were the fables of the Christians living in and nearby Arabia at that time. This paper describes two of the Christian fables Muhammad recited into the Qur'an.
Introduction

Muhammad had interaction with Christians. Khadija, his first wife, had a cousin named Waraqa, who was a Christian (Sirat Rasul Allah, p. 83, Guillaume's translation). He also was known to have spoken with Christians earlier on in his life during his travels with the caravans. Later, he was given a Christian slave girl as a present. This was Mary, the Egyptian Copt. She became his concubine. After she gave birth to a male child, he married her. No doubt he learned about some facts of Christianity from Mary as well. Further south of Medina, these was the Christian village of Najran. These people also had some dealings with Muhammad.

From these people Muhammad could have learned about Christianity and the Christian fables that circulated in the land.

In various places, the Qur'an mentions stories that are similar to those found in the NT. People and names are repeated, and some similarites exist between the NT and Qur'an. And as one would expect a story to change when it is told to and then repeated second or third hand, so too the Qur'anic versions of the stories differ from those that were earlier documented.

These Qur'anic stories are typical of those one would expect to find in the record of a man relying exclusively on hearsay and secondary sources because Muhammad could not read the books from which the Christians used.

Now, Ms. Pagels says, she has found the answer to her quest by writing a book, ''Beyond Belief: The Secret Gospel of Thomas.'' It is a study of one of the Gnostic gospels, early Christian texts written around the time of the New Testament and regarded as heretical. Ms. Pagels's book, clearly written, lyrical but deeply scholarly, is a surprise hit. Out just a month, it is moving up the best-seller list, and Random House has had to reprint it three times, with 108,000 copies now in print.

THE ISLAMIC DILEMMA

There is a final difference between Jesus and Muhammad that we haven’t considered—namely, that one of these men confirmed the message of the other. As we have seen, the Qur’an calls Jesus a “Messenger” of God, and Muslims are therefore required to honor Jesus’ teachings. But since the Gospels obviously support the Christian view of Jesus, Muslims who want to deny Jesus’ deity, death, and resurrection must say that the Gospels have been corrupted. And here Muslims face perhaps their greatest difficulty.
The Qur’an affirms the inspiration of the Christian scriptures (see 3:3–4, 7:157, 10:94, etc.). It also commands Christians to judge by what we read in the gospel (5:47), which makes no sense if the gospel has been significantly altered. Indeed, the Qur’an declares that we have “no ground to stand upon” if we do not adhere to the Torah and the gospel (5:68, Ali). Contrary to Muslim charges of corruption, the Qur’an claims that no one is capable of corrupting God’s Word (6:114–115, 18:27). Thus, a dilemma rises to the surface. If the Gospels are reliable, Muhammad cannot be a prophet, because the Gospels contradict Muhammad’s teachings. Alternatively, if the Gospels are unreliable, Muhammad cannot be a prophet, because Muhammad proclaimed the inspiration, preservation, and authority of the Christian scriptures. Either way, Muhammad cannot be a prophet.

ASSESSMENT

that Muhammad’s teachings self-destruct. This should cause any sincere, truth-seeking

Host:  Does the Quran mention any Holy Books that were revealed before by name specifically?

Jamal Badawi:
There are four that have been specifically mentioned in the Quran by name.  These include first the Scrolls of Abraham in (87:19) and (53:37), the Psalms of David in (17:55) and (4:163), the Torah given to Moses and is praised as giving guidance and light in (5:47) and (6:91) and the Evangel/Gospel (Ingeal in Arabic) given to Prophet Jesus (PBUH) appears in (5:4).  These are of course in addition to the last revelation and that is the Quran.  The Quran acknowledge previous revelation as these four are particularly mentioned.

An example of the mention of a Holy Book can be found in (3:1-3) “A.L.M. Allah.  There is no god but He,-the Living, the Self-Subsisting, Eternal.  It is He who sent down to thee (step by step), the truth, the Book, confirming what went before it; and He sent down the Law (of Moses) and the Gospel (of Jesus) before this, as a guide to mankind, and He sent down the criterion (of judgment between right and wrong).”  In the very same verse in the Quran there is mention of three of the major scriptures the Torah, the Gospel and the Quran given to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
